With monthly residencies at Oakland’s Sound Room and Keys Jazz Bistro in North Beach, the outfit has honed an expansive series of thematic shows (including the Grateful Dead, a natural development considering Theis’s five-year run in Bob Weir’s Wolfpack). Prince’s singular mélange of funk, jazz, and rock is right up the Jazz Mafia’s alley, and the combo’s deep familiarity and respect for his songbook turn concerts into revelatory celebrations. When the Jazz Mafia arrives, His Purpleness abides. The band features Kate Lamont (vocals), Daniel Casares (sax, vocals), Adam Theis (trombone, vocals), Andrew Levin (guitar, vocals), Ian Mcardle (keys), Joshua Thurston-Milgrom (upright bass), Henry Plumb (drums).
